In the wake of a devastating hailstorm that struck parts of Kayunga District on 23rd April 2025 leaving families displaced and property destroyed, the Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) in conjunction with the office of the Prime Minister (OPM) delivered non-food relief items to the affected households.
The storm, which hit several households in Kisaaba, Namagabi A and Namagabi B villages tore off roofs, destroyed crops, and left hundreds of residents exposed to the harsh weather conditions. Following a rapid needs assessment conducted by the Uganda Red Cross Society in coordination with district authorities and the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), the most affected households were identified.

Over 80 families received relief packages, which included; Tarpaulins for temporary shelter, Blankets and mosquito nets, jerry cans and soap for hygiene and Kitchen sets at an event held at Kisaaba village. In attendance were the village chairpersons, LCV chairperson Muwonge Andrew, Deputy RDC Baleke Solomon Trevor, Mayor and CAO of Kayunga district together with staff and volunteers of the Uganda Red Cross Society.
Speaking during the response, Edgar Ngonzi the Uganda Red Cross Branch Manager Mukono noted that “Most of the affected families lost their homes and belongings. They were sleeping in the open, exposed to cold and further risk. Our intervention is aimed at offering temporary relief as they work toward recovery
The district leadership, led by the Deputy RDC, Baleke Solomon appreciated the timely support and called on more partners to complement the relief efforts. “We thank Uganda Red Cross Society for always standing with the people in times of distress. This support will go a long way in helping the affected families cope with this sudden disaster,” said Baleke Solomon.
“We thank the Uganda Red Cross for coming to our aid. The items given will help us sleep better and rebuild as we wait for the next step,” said Steven Lutwama, a resident of Namagabi A.
Uganda Red Cross Society continues to stand as a beacon of hope for communities affected by emergencies and disasters across the country.
