Uganda Red Cross Society, Omugo Foundation, and UBTS Launch Blood Donation Drive in Kakumiro

In a collaborative effort to combat blood shortages and save lives, the Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS), in partnership with the Omugo Foundation and the Uganda Blood Transfusion Service (UBTS), launched a large-scale blood donation drive at Igayaza Sub-County in Kakumiro District.

The event, held on January 22, 2025, received overwhelming support from the local community and was graced by Princess Daphne Kabatalesa from the Omugo Foundation, district officials, chiefs from the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom, as well as staff from UBTS and URCS. The initiative sought to address the persistent challenge of blood shortages in hospitals and health centers, particularly for accident victims, mothers facing childbirth complications, and patients with chronic illnesses.

Speaking at the event, Henry Benda, the UBTS Hoima Team Leader, expressed gratitude to the Uganda Red Cross Society and the Omugo Foundation for their unwavering support in organizing the blood drive. He urged residents to embrace voluntary blood donation to ensure that the regional blood bank remains adequately stocked to support patients in need.

Dr. Josephine Okwera, Director of Health and Social Services at URCS, who represented the Secretary General, highlighted the significance of partnerships in addressing blood shortages. She acknowledged the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom, through the Omugo Foundation, for its commitment to supporting health initiatives.

“As the Uganda Red Cross Society marks 60 years of service, we continue to mobilize communities to donate blood. In the past, schools were a major source of blood donations, but during school breaks, the country often experiences shortages. This has necessitated a shift towards community-driven blood donation efforts,” Dr. Okwera explained.

“Blood donation is a powerful act of solidarity and hope. We are proud to be part of this noble cause,” Princess Kabatalesa said.

The Uganda Red Cross Society, Omugo Foundation, and UBTS reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening community engagement in blood donation efforts, ensuring that no life is lost due to a lack of blood. The initiative marks a significant step towards building a healthier and more resilient society.
