Uganda Red Cross Society Receives 1200 Buffalo bicycles from World Bicycle Relief
Over 1200 buffalo bicycles have been handed over to Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS), after a partnership with World Bicycle Relief. The Buffalo bicycles are aimed at supporting volunteers during community outreach.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Mr. Robert Kwesiga the Secretary General Uganda Red Cross Society appreciated World Bicycle Relief for the donation. He further noted that “the bicycles have come at a time when the National Society is grappling to find ways to ease mobility for volunteers in the field. “some of these volunteers walk up to 10km with a backpack, in difficult terrain. The partnership is a big relief, the bicycles will go to volunteers and staff in the field.”
Mr. Sean Granville - Ross, Senior Global Director of Programs, Buffalo bicycles in his address noted that the bicycles are designed to allow people challenged with distance to overcome the problem of distance. “With this Buffalo bicycle the burden of 10km is no longer there. We hope the bicycle will contribute to the mandate and mission of the volunteers by enabling them to reach the people quickly, to help the people. The bicycles can carry up to 100 kg.

URCS Management informs the general public that there is a forged organization in the names of “Red Cross East Africa” which also masquerades as a member of the International Red Cross family. The same organization is promising jobs through “Amnesty International” (suspected scam too) and the applicants have to present Red Cross membership cards for them to be considered.

Kasese – 11/10/2017
Uganda Red Cross supports communities affected by Cholera, Floods and Landslides in Western Uganda.
As part of the National Disaster preparedness and Response plan, Uganda Red Cross Society has stepped up efforts to fight the Cholera outbreak in Western Uganda. This is part of the wider context in response to disease outbreaks and disaster preparedness and response towards people affected and those at risk.
Over the past 2 weeks, heavy rains have posed a great threat to parts of western Uganda (Kisoro, Kabale, Kasese and Kibaale) where houses have been destroyed, latrines washed away, livestock and gardens destroyed leaving over 5,660 people in need of basic amenities. At least eight people lost their lives in Kasese due to the Cholera outbreak. A big number have lost shelter and have been displaced as a result of floods, landslides, hailstorm, and lightning. Schools too have collapsed leaving learners with no classroomsto undertake their studies.
The Uganda Red Cross has responded to this call by deploying a team of 200 National Disaster Response Volunteers, professionally trained and well-placed to handle such emergencies. Relief items; including saucepans, plates, cups, blankets, tarpaulins, jerricans, soap, mosquito nets, and water purifications tablets are among the non-food items distributed so far.
