Girl Campaign

Introduction and Background:

In 2015, Government together with its partners signed a charter committing to promote menstrual Health management. In the same year, the Ministry of Education and Sports issued out a circular to all districts, schools and institutions of learning highlighting guidelines on MHM. The Education and Sports Sector has also conducted capacity building programs of senior women and men teachers on MHM. Government of Uganda in the Second National Development Plan (2016/17- 2019/20) committed to support MHM including supply of sanitary towels among girls in primary and secondary schools.

It is against this background that Uganda Red Cross Society has come up with a campaign Keep a Girl in School to support the Ministry of Education and Sports in the key functions of advocacy, coordination and resource mobilization for MHM in schools.
Menstrual Health Management (MHM) is a big agenda of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Global Movement. The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) hosts Global online MHM seminars (Webinars). Best practices of MHM are shared among over 170 Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies from all over the world. The Federation/IFRC as well shared Global Menstrual Health Plans for 2018/2019. URCS plans to benchmark on such initiatives to implement interventions that will enable knowledge dissemination and to improve access to hygienic sanitation facilities and menstrual supplies for the continuous improvement of MHM.

The Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) has successfully and continues to implement several projects in the area Reproductive Health, Maternal and Child Health areas. URCS intervened to mobilize mama kits with hygienic packs to the former young girl abductees of the LRA and provided psycho-social support. URCS has also successfully distributed Menstrual Health kits to Teso region and Nakivaale refugee settlement Under a mandate entrusted by the National Disaster Policy (2006) and a Memorandum of Understanding/MOU with the Ministry of Health, the Uganda Red Cross National Society/URCS continues to support government programs in the health sector with measles and polio immunization, Malaria, HIV/AIDS prevention, Health promotion, blood donations amongst other life- saving interventions.
As an auxiliary to the Government of Uganda, URCS works closely with public authorities and communities all over the country. With support from local and international partners and within the respective national policy guidelines, Uganda Red Cross runs several humanitarian and community development programs in the areas of Water, Sanitation and Health (WASH), among others, using a communitybased approach
